Halloween is fast approaching and this is a great excuse to dig out some ghoul and zombie themed games (as if we need an excuse!). Halloween can be a great opportunity for a themed games evening with friends. We’ve gathered together a list of some of these spooky Halloween Games we love, but leave a comment and tell us your favourite Halloween game or your Halloween plans.
Last Night on Earth
Last Night on Earth, The Zombie Game is a fast-paced game of brain-eating Zombies, small town Heroes, and horror movie action. Players take on the role of either the Heroes or Zombies. To survive, Hero players must use their cunning and ingenuity (as well as a bit of luck) to make it through the night. Only by working together can the Heroes hope to fend off the hordes of Zombies and find some way to stop them or escape.
The part of this game that appeals to me the most is that you can play as either Zombies or Heroes, so if you play as a Hero against friends, it will feel like a very different game playing again as Zombies. (to be clear some players have to play as the other side – you can’t all be heroes!)
Last Night on Earth was played on Tabletop, the Geek and Sundry Board Game show. Have look and see how they fared and whether heroes conquered the Zombies!
Zombicide is a cooperative Zombie fighting game for 1-6 players. Each player plays as one or several (in the case of a 1 player game) human survivors who must maintain a balance between survival and slaughter. They race to complete tasks to ultimately escape from the zombies.
I find the cooperative style of this game good fun as experienced and new players can help one another and quickly learn to play as a team and discuss strategies. The board is made up of tiles and pieces (such as doors) which combined with a number of mission cards mean there are many different missions to fulfil and if you run out you can download new missions online or find fan made missions.

Castle Panic is another Cooperative Game. I suppose this has a weaker Halloween connection but it is a great game. You play as the Castle defenders in the centre of the board and must defend from the onslaught of Monsters. This game is less “scary” than the previous Zombie filled games so would make a good family choice.
Castle Panic is another game which has been played by the team at Geek and Sundry on Tabletop, check out their video and see how the game plays.
Zombie dice is a fun dice game from Steve Jackson Games. Its simple, you’re a zombie, you want to eat brains but avoid the shotgun! The 13 custom dice represent victims. Push your luck to roll brains, but stop rolling before the shotgun blasts end your turn! Your goal is to eat more brains than your opponents. Zombie dice is a fun quick and simple dice game.
We reviewed Gloom on Best Board Games here. Gloom is a storytelling card game where you control the “mis”fortunes of a family and try to invoke as many tragedies on them as possible so that you end the game with the lowest number of pathos points. A great Halloween game as a twist on telling ghost stories.
Several popular board games have special Halloween expansions available, these can give a new lease of life to a popular game or can be just a slight change to the appearance.
Ticket to ride Halloween Freighter
The Halloween Freighter Expansion for Ticket to Ride gives the game a new set of player carriage pieces and stations in the shape and colour of pumpkins.
King of Tokyo Halloween Monster Pack
The Halloween Monster Pack gives two new Monsters for the game King of Tokyo, Pumpkin Jack and Boogey Woogy. Each monster also has its of set of 8 Evolution cards. The expansion also gives six orange and black Halloween themed dice and twelve new power cards.
